Working the 12 steps
They key to long term recovery from addiction is working the 12 steps. We suggest finding a sponsor- someone whose recovery you relate to who has worked the steps already- to guide you through this process and hold you accountable.
You will also need two books to help you through the steps:
Here are some directions to help you work each step:
- Step 1: Read the appropriate sections in the Big Book and 12 and 12. Write the history of your addiction with a focus on your powerlessness over it and the unmanageability it has caused in your life. Read this to your sponsor or at a 12 step meeting to truly admit your powerlessness. It should take at least 20 minutes, but may take longer.
