Working the 12 steps

They key to long term recovery from addiction is working the 12 steps.  We suggest finding a sponsor- someone whose recovery you relate to who has worked the steps already- to guide you through this process and hold you accountable.

You will also need two books to help you through the steps:

Here are some directions to help you work each step:

  1. Step 1: Read the appropriate sections in the Big Book and 12 and 12.  Write the history of your addiction with a focus on your powerlessness over it and the unmanageability it has caused in your life.  Read this to your sponsor or at a 12 step meeting to truly admit your powerlessness.  It should take at least 20 minutes, but may take longer.
  2. Step 2: Use this worksheet.
  3. Step 3: Use this worksheet.
  4. Step 4: First, fill out the questions in this worksheet.  Then, use this template to create your inventory.
  5. Step 5: Read your completed inventory to your sponsor.
  6. Step 6: Use this worksheet.
  7. Step 7: Use this worksheet.
  8. Step 8: First, fill out the questions in this worksheet.  Then, use this template to make a list of all the people you have harmed.
  9. Step 9: Make amends to the people on your list.
  10. Step 10: Use this worksheet.
  11. Step 11: Use this worksheet.
  12. Step 12: Use this worksheet.

Note: Steps 10, 11, and 12 require regular practice.

Once you finish the 12 steps, the journey isn't over.  Go back to step 1 and work through them again and again through your life to ensure long term recovery and the happy, joyous, and free life it brings.
